Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Senior Activity Center: The public is invited to review and comment on a Draft Negative Declaration and Environmental Initial Study that has been prepared for the Senior Activity Center Project. Documents are available for review at the Coronado Library, 640 Orange Ave., the Community Development Department at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way, and on the City’s website. The project will also be reviewed in the upcoming months by the Design Review, Historic Resource, and Planning commissions. Trash Can Lids: Public Services crews is installing 100 new lids for trash receptacles in the busy business district in the coming weeks. Many are already in place. The lids will improve cleanliness and help keep Coronado’s streets free from litter due to overflow and pest interference. Some are located in the 100 block of Orange Avenue, but a majority of them can be found from the 800 to 1200 blocks of Orange. They are color-coded to simplify recycling, and are better equipped to keep trash inside and seagulls out.
Navy Releases Draft Environmental Report for Coastal Campus: The Navy released its draft Environmental Impact Statement for the planned growth of its Naval Special Warfare Command along the South Silver Strand Training Complex. This area, referred to as the “Coastal Campus,” is on the ocean side of the Silver Strand Highway from south of the Coronado Cays to Imperial Beach. The purpose of the proposed Naval Base Coronado Coastal Campus is to support the Congressionally-mandated growth of Naval Special Warfare Command and to meet its current and anticipated mission requirements. The Coastal Campus would support the skills and knowledge required by Navy personnel within a college campus-like setting and would include a mix of facilities to develop proficiency in equipment maintenance and use, classroom and tactical training instruction, and equipment storage. The draft environmental report evaluates the potential environmental effects associated with the development of the Coastal Campus. A Notice of Availability was published in the Federal Register today, kicking off a 60-day public comment period. The City of Coronado will be closely reviewing and providing comments on the report. The public can also provide comments by attending a public open house on August 13 in Imperial Beach or August 14 in Coronado. Comments also may be submitted online or by mail. The deadline for comments is September 22. For more information, visit http://www.nbccoastalcampuseis.com/.
