Coronado’s boys’ varsity basketball team hosted Crawford High School last Tuesday for the first game of the week. In past weeks, Coronado has had difficulty maximizing their shooting opportunities. Tuesday’s game took a completely different turn, as Coronado made fifty percent of two-point shots, fifty percent of three-point shots, and seventy percent of free throws. “We moved the ball better on offense, resulting in a season-high thirteen assists,” says Coach Laaperi. After going down 8-15 in the first quarter, Coronado scored 23 points in both the second and third quarter. This allowed them to carry a 20-point lead against their opponents into the fourth quarter. Crawford was unable to make a sufficient comeback in the last quarter, as Coronado took the victory 69-59.
Junior Caden Gentry led the team on offense, scoring a total of 19 points. Junior Ryan Herman followed Gentry by scoring a total of 12 points, including 5 steals and 5 assists. Mike Cunningham had an excellent game as well, scoring 11 points.
Friday’s game against Christian High School proved more difficult for Coronado’s offense. After four hard-fought quarters, Coronado fell to their opponents 42-58.
The team’s overall season record is nine wins to eleven losses.
