This past weekend, the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team entered into a pool of schools from the South Bay area for the Steele Canyon Holiday Bash Invitational. The first round of the tournament was played against Hoover High School on Saturday. In a tight game, eventually falling short 35-36, Coronado came back from a ten-point deficit in the fourth quarter. The Islanders took a total of three leads in the last minute and a half. In the last 23 seconds, senior Sophia Quast made one of two free throws to take a one-point lead. Coronado quickly lost that lead with 5.3 seconds to go, losing by a one-point margin.
Playing Monte Vista High School for the second time this season, Coronado played them in the second round of the tournament. The first quarter proved difficult offensively, but they were able to keep a 10-5 lead by the end of it. Monte Vista didn’t even score in the second quarter, but Coronado was only able to gain six points, ending the half at 16-5. The tide completely turned in the second half of the game, as sophomore Lauren White helped the offense gain momentum. White led the team in shots, with 25 points total. The final score was an Islanders win at 45-24.
The final round of the tournament was played against Sage Creek High School at El Cajon Valley High School. Sage Creek dominated the offense throughout the entire first half, 23-12. The second half was much slower for both teams, but Coronado again fell short, with the final score being 32-18.
