I met Carrie Downey seven years ago when she sponsored a city resolution supporting CHS’ Crown City Robotics Team formation and participation in the county’s FIRST Robotics competition. For the dozen students who dedicated hours to fundraising and self-education in programming and mechanics to bring their robot to life, it was an unexpected honor to have Carrie reach out to them, and shine light on their accomplishments in front of the City Council and meeting attendees. This is the true Carrie — she cares about the people of Coronado, our children, and our lives — even the smallest details do not escape her heart and her head. Along these same lines, she convinced the City Council to allow residents to be able to use school district playgrounds and sports facilities at no charge; something that seems so reasonable now, but had to be fought for.
Over the years, I have contacted Carrie a number of times for clarification or information about certain city and military issues. She has always been thoughtful and thorough in her responses, really taking the time to understand my concerns and discuss matters in depth. The breadth of her professional experience has given her an amazing knowledge base which helps her to connect-the-dots and understand how to navigate the unique position our city occupies between the federal, state, county governments and various branches of the military.
Competence, experience, consensus building, care for our community and citizens — these are the traits that we need in our mayor. These are the traits abundantly exhibited by Carrie Downey; there is no better choice for our next Mayor of Coronado.
