It’s time to say goodbye to the ghosts of Wendy’s fast food and give a spirited welcome to The Tavern – Coronado’s newest restaurant. Many of us can remember heading downstairs to the Wendy’s ‘basement’ at 1310 Orange Avenue to pick-up a burger and ‘Frosty’, but those days are long gone. All that changes tomorrow (August 5th) when The Tavern opens it’s larger-than-life doors to Coronado.
The Tavern

Happy Hours: 4pm-7pm and 10pm-2am.
They will be serving a limited dinner menu and be adding more items and a lunch serving in the coming weeks.
eCoronado.com got a sneak peek at the inside and snapped the first photos of this brand new establishment. Actually, it looks as if it’s been there for about 100 years. The owners describe it as ‘vintage industrial’ and designed weathered materials that were rescued from days gone by. Elements include chipped bricks, pockmarked cement, gymnasium wood floors, vintage chandeliers, warehouse metal siding, exposed wood and steel piping to name a few. Our favorite industrial features were the huge swinging metal doors as your enter the main area and the disappearing street-level windows that vanish into the brick walls.
Notice the wood from a high school gym used as the bar top.
The Halpin’s (Peggy, Sean, Karson, Grey, and Delaine) are the creative and passionate driving force behind The Tavern concept and implementation. This busy Coronado family owns and operates Orange Blossoms at 952 Orange Avenue and the Blue Moose restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona. Due to their love for Coronado, and in an effort to reduce Sean’s commute back and forth to Scottsdale, Peggy and Sean tirelessly searched to find a location for a Coronado restaurant.
Coronado architect, John Welsh of Jawa Studio, was consulted for his thoughts on the space at the corner of Orange Avenue and Churchill. John, his wife Stacey and Craig Becky are also major partners in The Tavern. John combined his talents with general contractor Kraig Nicolls (Nicolls Design) to build the restaurant. They incorporated a vintage industrial aesthetic and encouraged the redesign of the entrance to incorporate patio seating and embrace pedestrian activity.
John located the salvaged high school basketball court planks while searching for vintage materials and incorporated them into The Tavern bar top and flooring. Kraig Nicolls was instrumental with implementing all of the design elements of The Tavern and helped to create the ‘tavern’ atmosphere. Be sure to check out the bathrooms to get the full ‘industrial’ flavor of the restaurant (photos below).
The Tavern atmosphere is casual and approachable, the menu will be unpretentious but creative and the drink offerings are expansive from house wines by the glass, craft beers, to innovative specialty drinks. They are opening with a limited dinner menu and will be adding more items and a lunch serving in the coming weeks. Some of the menu items include:
Field greens
Chicken sliders & wings
Angus burgers
Fish sandwiches
Roasted lemon herb chicken
Mac & cheese with breadcrumb topping
The Tavern will offer a full bar including local and familiar craft beers.
The tin ‘pool’ will be filled with ice to chill your drinks while you eat.
The entrance to the men’s restroom.
Inside the women’s restroom.
The staff going over the final details before opening night.

Doors open at 5pm Friday, August 5th. We encourage local foodies to head over and check it out this weekend.
