From the sidewalks of Orange Avenue in 1988 to the 28th CSF Telethon on March 10thshowcasing over 700 Coronado Unified students, the much-anticipated event continues to entertain while raising essential funds for the Coronado Unified School District. “There was excitement in the air as families and community members enjoyed the midway games and Class of 2016 food court in the Quad while student acts, under the supervision of dedicated teachers, performed live on the Coronado High School Theatre stage,” noted Chris Searles, MD, Chairman of the Board. “While our Team Tote students from Coronado Middle School proudly displayed a final tally of $182,368, we’ve now reached $185,695, still climbing towards our $200,000 goal. With over a hundred of last year’s donors yet to step up, I’m confident we’ll get there in order to maintain STEAM pathway programs and reduce class sizes by the sections of teachers these donations now fund, K-12.”
“The Telethon is a huge endeavor as a fundraising vehicle, made even more worthwhile when I see the scale of this hands-on learning project for our students, “said Jenny Moore, CHS Principal. Under the direction of Producer Tony Perri, students from CHS CTV and CoSA Digital Media along with members of the KCMS broadcast class at the middle school produced, directed, and taped the show. The production is variety show, including a combination of live acts from each school, videos about CSF funding and business sponsors, live reading of donor names, and check presentations from the community. A huge thanks to Maggie & Dennis Holland of the Coronado Which Wich, who held a CSF Which Wich day and raised over $4,000 for our schools and presented it live at the Telethon!
Village Elementary triumphed with the highest percentage of participation and will enjoy an all-school MooTime Ice Cream party, thanks to Blue Bridge Hospitality. The Emerald City Surfboard was won by proud CUSD grandparents Dr. and Mrs. Charles Bosworth of Texas, Mark and Robin Sachs won the Holland’s bike, and brunch for six at the Hotel del Coronado went to by Jim and Kelly O’Connor.
CSF was proud to honor Boney’s Bayside Market as Merchant of the Year, with Debi and Ryan Boney receiving the award. As a former school teacher, Debi has been a strong supporter of the schools since the market opened, donating funds toward the annual Benefit Auction and the CSF Summer Enrichment Program (June 14th to July 1st 2016). “With Mullins Orthodontics stepping up as Producing Partner and new partners Three Wire Systems, Coronado Smiles Dental, Smart & Final Extra!, and Elia Enterprises joining returning partners Hotel del Coronado, Willis Allen Real Estate, Chicago Title, Clayton’s, CMG Mortgage, eCoronado, la mer, Nicolls Design/Build, and Spiro’s Greek Café, the community businesses are significant supporters of our schools,” added Michelle Gilmore, Director of Development. “I enjoyed getting to know the Boney family during our filming of their Merchant of the Year video and so appreciate their continued and substantial donations.”
