Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Eucalyptus and Holiday Tree Updates

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Eucalyptus Tree Removal Update

At this time, two of the four Sugar Gum eucalyptus trees identified as hazardous have been removed from the 100 block of E Avenue. City staff met with several area residents on Monday, September 29, and engaged in a constructive conversation regarding the replacement of those trees set for removal. On Tuesday, September 30, the City’s Street Tree Committee held a special meeting to consider the replacement trees. A recommendation has been forwarded to the City Council. This recommendation will be considered by City Council at its October 7 meeting.

Holiday Lights

Public Services tested holiday lights this past week. Due to newly planted trees that are not fully mature and the removal of diseased trees along Orange Avenue, Public Services is looking for new options to make sure the Orange Avenue median is as festive as ever. Public Services is testing different light patterns and options, such as possibly a pole tree as a substitute.

New Online Bicycle Registration

As of October 1, the Coronado Police Department transitioned from the National Bike Registry and has implemented a new and convenient way for citizens to register their bicycles directly with the Police Department. Coronado’s new online application will automatically upload the bicycle and owner information to the Police Department’s Record Management System, giving the Police immediate access to the information. All Coronado bicycles that were previously registered with the National Bike Registry will be transferred into the new system. To register a bicycle, citizens can press the “Register Your Bike” icon on the Police Department web page to access the application or by using this link.

Port Planning Workshop

The Board of Port Commissioners will hold a daylong public workshop on Wednesday, October 8, on long-range planning for the North Bay, the Central Bay and the South Bay. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kona Kai Resort and Marina, 1551 Shelter Island Drive, in San Diego. The session is part of the Port’s Integrated Planning effort for San Diego Bay and tidelands. The public is welcome to attend. On the agenda:

– Preliminary planning concepts and a framework for a comprehensive waterfront access plan;
– The public realm, or public space, and related financial considerations;
– The scope of Integrated Planning phases; and
– Ideas for conventional and unconventional land uses in the North Bay, the Central Bay, and the South Bay.

Portable Restroom Update

The new portable restroom currently located at the beach end of Avenida del Sol will be moved by Monday, October 13, to a City storage facility in the Cays. The restroom will be available for special events in town throughout the year, such as the annual Fourth of July celebration. The restroom was placed on Avenida del Sol in late August, and was a popular stop for beach visitors. Public Services determined that due to heavy use, the restroom required service three times a week. The facility has one ADA-compliant stall and two single use stalls and is operational seven days a week from about 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

National Rideshare Month

October is National Rideshare Month. Commuters in Coronado and elsewhere are encouraged to consider alternatives, such as carpooling, vanpooling, transit, walking and biking. The City of Coronado is participating in the Corporate Rideshare Challenge. Individuals and organizations can sign up to participate at the iCommute program website and be entered to win free prizes. It’s a great time to try the Free Coronado Commuter Ferry, save some money, make some friends and get fit. Rideshare Month is hosted locally by the San Diego Association of Governments.

Street Tree Committee Vacancy

The Street Tree Committee will have a vacancy as of November 1, 2014. Applications are being accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, October 6. Additional information can be found on this flier below or by contacting the City Clerk’s Office at (619) 522-7320.

Accessible Pedestrian Signals and Tenth Street Reconfiguration

The signal pole foundations were poured last week but work to install the signal poles has been delayed due to the requirement to install individual pedestrian push button poles on the southeast corner of the intersection. The details of this change are being worked out and construction will resume as soon as possible. The California Department of Transportation has taken exception to the audible message instructing pedestrians that they are crossing “Orange Avenue” and turned off the required audible signal until the message removes the word “avenue.” This will take several weeks.
