There’s a new barre in town and it creates a new exercise niche on Coronado… and beyond

When Andrea Kane opened Bungalow Yoga this year on 8th St, she quickly realized something else was missing.

“I immediately started getting calls for private sessions and people wanted a workout with a little more oomph,” she said. “That’s how Align Cardio Barre and YogaBarre was created.”

Unlike many of the barre classes offered, Align Cardio Barre and YogaBarre are not ballet-based workouts. Instead, Kane has chosen to create a workout that integrates squats, variations of leg lifts, small weights, yoga and targeted core work for a challenging, strength building fitness class.

“You will sweat, you will be sore and then you’ll come back for more,” she said. “We go through air squats, weighted squats, planks, yoga moves, leg lifts, scissor kicks, bootylicious butt moves and it’s all synced with a great soundtrack that keeps you moving and motivated. It’s the only barre class of its kind on the island and is completely different from the other barre methods available now.”

Students have two options for classes: the more intense option is the Cardio Barre class, which gives 40 minutes of leg work and squats, arm work and core work. For beginner’s, Kane recommends starting with the YogaBarre class. This class offers 25 minutes of leg work with minimal squats, arm work, a 20 minute asana session then finishes with core work. Combined with an upbeat music mix (from her days as an AFN DJ in Naples, Italy) the classes bring a whole new workout option to Coronado and is the only place to find such as class.

“I created these classes as a way for women and men to get strong and feel great. For me, ballet based barre didn’t get help me strong. I’ve watched regular students build muscle tone and get stronger and it’s pretty incredible to know this happened from something I created.”

Kane was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2010, a debilitating, chronic condition that inflames and deteriorates the joints. She attributes a great medicine, massage and yoga with helping her get on track.

“This condition is here to stay, but I am living proof that movement can most definitely make a difference and that’s what I bring to my students every day in class and in our private sessions,” she said.

Many students have asked for mobile versions of the workout, so Kane is currently working on bringing her workout to a larger audience.

‘Within the next few months I hope to have my video channel available and will offers classes and sessions via Skype and am talking with some local studios to offer the classes to more students than I can fit in my studio. I am super excited about all the possibilities!”

New local students with a Coronado address on their ID can take advantage of their first class free. There are introductory options and military discounts available, as well.
