Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Oz Con, Roundabout Construction, and more

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Oz Con International Preparation: The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission is busy preparing Coronado to be the host site of Oz Con International, from August 1-7, featuring a number of events related to “The Wizard of Oz” and author L. Frank Baum. The event will be held the week before Winkie Con 2014, the annual celebration of all things Oz that is celebrating 50 years and will be held in San Diego from August 8-10. Oz Con International will be a community festival highlighting Coronado’s special connection to the author. Baum often stayed at the Hotel del Coronado, writing at least three of his Oz books while there. He also rented a home just a block from the Del on Star Park Circle. The Coronado event features children’s camps, a musical cabaret at the Coronado Playhouse, an Oz exhibition at the Coronado Public Library, a screening of the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz 3D” at the Coronado Village Theatre as well as other events such as lectures and tours of Baum’s Enchanted Island. On August 2, the Cultural Arts Commission and Coronado MainStreet present “Celebrate Oz!” a free community festival sponsored by Del Coronado Realty. Summer Vacation Rentals: As summer gets in full swing, the City would like to remind homeowners that renting a residential property in Coronado for less than 26 days at a time is prohibited. Short-term rentals can create an intensified use that brings excessive vehicles, noise, and turnover of people in a residential home or condo that disrupts the livability of the neighborhood. The City wants to preserve the quality of life and maintain the residential character of local neighborhoods. Violators may be fined and subject to legal action. Renting a private home or condo for special events, weekend stays or as a weekly vacation home is against the law regardless of the time period between rentals. Residents are asked to comply with the law, to be a good neighbor and to help maintain the residential atmosphere in the community. If you would like to report a short-term rental in your neighborhood, email [email protected] or call the City Manager’s Office at (619) 522-7335.

Roundabout: This week, construction efforts on the permanent roundabout were focused primarily on storm drain improvements although progress was also made on the continuing installation of curbs and gutters, landscaping, and the center island retaining wall veneer. The intersection remains closed to through traffic with drivers being detoured around the construction zone. Traffic enforcement in the area has been increased in response to concerned area residents and officers have been issuing tickets to drivers who are violating posted signs, speeding and not making full stops where required. Please remember to follow the detours and obey all traffic signs in and around the construction area. For more information on the project, this PSA explains the construction on the permanent roundabout on Pomona Avenue. For any other questions, call the City’s Principal Engineer Jim Newton at (619) 522-7313 or send an email to [email protected].

Accessible Pedestrian Signals and Tenth Street Reconfiguration: The contractor began installing this week the Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant pedestrian signal equipment. Starting at the intersection of First Street and Orange Avenue, crews have been working their way south to all the signalized intersections along State Route 75. The equipment includes audible signals for pedestrians to assist the visually impaired, letting them know when it is safe to cross the street. Countdown timer displays are also being installed to inform pedestrians how much time is available to cross the street. Work to install all signal equipment will continue through the end of the month and is scheduled to be completed by August 11.
