New Smyrna Beach’s North Causeway Community Advocates Name Change to Coronado Island

People of Coronado, CA… WE ARE NOT ALONE. It shouldn’t come as a shock to you that there are many references all over the world to the name Coronado. They range from cities, to high schools, to forests, to people, to companies and there is even a volcano that is located on Isla Coronado. Don’t believe us, here are just a few examples:

Coronado National Forest is located in New Mexico and Arizona

Coronado High School is located in Lubbock, Texas.

Coronado is an unincorporated community in Wichita County, Kansas.

Coronado is a municipality of Chihuahua, in northern Mexico.

Coronado is a coastal city near Panama City.

Coronado is a volcano on Isla Coronado, in Baja California, Mexico.

Coronado Stone Products….makers of….stone products.

Rod Coronado is a Native American (Pascua Yaqui) eco-anarchist and animal rights activist.

All of the above is understandable and to date, no other entity has tried to lay claim to the name Coronado Island. Until now. It appears that a small causeway, specifically North Causeway in New Smyrna Beach, Florida is very interested in being renamed “Coronado Island”. In fact, there is a group called New Smyrna Beach Citizens for Smart Growth that is heading up the name change effort.

Yes, we know that Coronado, CA isn’t really officially called “Coronado Island”, but we do have that on our sign as you cross the bridge into town (photo above). Years ago, some folks tried to change the name to Coronado Peninsula (on April 1st), but that was not supported. 🙂

In order for the name to change from North Causeway, to Coronado Island, New Smyrna city and the state of Florida need to approve it.

An interesting note is that according to Google Maps, the “island” across the river from North Causeway is Chicken Island. Perhaps instead of renaming it to “Coronado Island”, they could be consistent and call it “Egg Island” – assuming that “Chicken Island” did come first.

Help us out “The Real Coronado Island”, any thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments.
