Evan Arnold Completes Eagle Scout Service Project at Silver Strand State Beach

Coronado median at the entrance booth to Silver Strand State Beach is redesigned thanks to Coronado teens.

For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Coronado Middle School eighth grader Evan Arnold, with the support of 15 volunteers, planned, organized, designed and built a newly enhanced island median at the entrance booth to Silver Strand State Beach.

Evan, who turned 14 in October, worked on the project for six months after raising more than $600, researching what was needed and designing the new median.

Evan got the idea for his project while he was camping at Silver Strand with his Boy Scout Troop 806. Evan noticed that some of the facilities at Silver Strand could use some updating. He thought this was an excellent opportunity for his Boy Scout Troop to give back to the community, especially during these tough economic times.

Evan worked with a group of fifteen volunteers for three consecutive Sundays to complete the Project. One of the work days was a cold, windy rainy day but the boys continued working despite the unfavorable conditions. Some of the benefits of the the newly designed meridian is it will be much easier for the maintenance staff to maintain, will require less water, and it enhances the beauty of the entrance at Silver Strand

“I am so thankful to have had the support of the California State Parks, their representative, Heather Sanderson and all of the volunteers that helped me to complete this project. It was truly a group effort.”

“It was a rewarding experience to see something you have been planning and working on for a long time actually come together. Hopefully our small contribution will be something that will last for many years.”

Evan Arnold, of Boy Scout Troop 806, passed the Eagle Board of review and earned his Eagle rank on December 28, 2012. Evan has served in key leadership positions in his Troop and is currently the Senior Patrol Leader. He has currently earned twenty-nine merit badges, and has contributed more than 90 hours of community service hours on his path to Eagle Scout. Earning the rank of Eagle is a significant accomplishment, in that fewer than four percent of all scouts reach this level. Evan is the son of Tom and Brenda Arnold of Coronado.
