Coronado School of the Arts Presents Flight to Neverland, a Contemporary Take on Peter Pan

The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Classical & Contemporary Dance program is pleased to present its winter dance concert, Flight to Neverland, on Friday, December 9 & Saturday, December 10 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, December 11 at 2 p.m.

Under the direction of department chair Betzi Roe, the CoSA Dance program has gained a reputation for outstanding, original reproductions of famous children’s classics, including 2009’s The Cracked Nut and last year’s Journey to Oz. This year, J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan tale will come alive on the stage of the Coronado Performing Arts Center at Coronado High.

Flight to Neverland follows the spritely Peter Pan, who appears in the bedroom of the Darling family—though in this contemporary version, it’s a sleepover of teenage girl friends instead of a group of siblings—and takes the children on a journey to Neverland, where they encounter pirates, Indians, lost children, mermaids and, of course, a crocodile.

The production is choreographed largely by the students in CoSA’s dance program. Each choreographer selected a section of the story and a dance style that complimented that section, choosing from jazz, hip-hop, classical dance, and contemporary dance. The music is an eclectic mix ranging from movie scores to classical music to pop songs. Additional musical contributions will come from the CoSA Musical Theatre Tour Group, who will sing a selection from the musical Spring Awakening.

Coronado dancers include Caroline Courtney, who will be dancing the lead role of Peter, Eleana Franco, who will play Peter’s nemesis Captain Hook, Shannon Clancy, Hannah Frey, Megan Lopez, Kanela Matey, Alana Peisner, and Aria Rodli.

CoSA dance faculty Tiffany Bagg, Matt Carney, Daniel Marshall, Gina Sorensen, and Sadie Weinberg have also contributed exciting choreography to this production. The faculty, students, and artistic director Betzi Roe are all looking forward to an energetic and seamless production.

Come celebrate the holidays with CoSA and Peter Pan! Tickets range from $6 to $14, depending on age, and may be purchased online at www.cosafoundation.org or at the door 45 minutes before show time. All seating is general admission. For more information please call 619.522.4050 ext.5.
