HOUNDS HANG 10 AT 6TH ANNUAL “LOEWS CORONADO BAY RESORT SURF DOG COMPETITION” ON JUNE 4 IN SAN DIEGO
Four-legged fundraiser to benefit San Diego County classrooms in need
IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (May 4, 2011) See Spot surf at the “Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition,” the nation’s original boarding competition for man’s best friend. Now in its sixth year, this summer’s event is expected to draw more than 60 surf dogs and thousands of spectators from across the U.S.
This popular canine competition is an extension of Loews Hotels’ award-winning Loews Loves Pets program and has become a hugely successful fundraiser for non-profit organizations. This year’s event benefits Loews Hotels’ Good Neighbor Partner, DonorsChoose.org. All across the country, thousands of public school classrooms lack the materials that are essential for learning. DonorsChoose.org provides a forum for public school teachers to post classroom needs and project requests for individual donors to choose from and sponsor. Loews Coronado Bay Resort, along with the help of its surf dog heroes, has set a goal to donate $10,000 to San Diego County schools through DonorsChoose.org this year.
Loews Coronado Bay Resort’s Surf Dog Competition takes place on Saturday, June 4, in Imperial Beach, Calif. with an action-packed schedule featuring:
§ 10:00 a.m to 10:30 a.m. Optional surfing lessons for less experienced canines
§ 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Heat One: Small Surf Dogs (40 pounds and under)
§ 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Heat Two: Large Surf Dogs (41 pounds and over)
§ 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Heat Three: Tandem Surfing (dogs and humans)

Judging will be conducted by Mayor Jim Janney, Mayor of Imperial Beach; Kathleen Cochran, general manager of Loews Coronado Bay Resort, Teevan McManus, owner of Coronado Surfing Academy, and a representative of Banfield Pet Hospital. Each competitor/team has 10 minutes to catch their two waves, and is scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.” In addition to endless bragging rights, the first place winner of each division scores a ton of great prizes, including the ultimate pet vacation at Loews Coronado Bay Resort.
The cost to enter the competition is $50 for Division One or Two and $55 for Division Three. Attendance is free and open to the public. Competitors score a great goody bag and competition medal. In addition, out-of-town guests can take advantage of a special $159 guestroom rate at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, based on availability. For more information, please visit www.LoewsSurfDog.com.
