Sculptor/Metal

“Bring the metal to life.” This is Amos Robinson’s artistic mantra. And he does it very well. Amos uses stainless steel as his medium of expression. His process integrates fluid shapes, kinetic motion, sensual form, reflective light and rich color to transform a sheet of cold hard steel. Amos honed his understanding of metal and mechanics over many years spent collecting and restoring classic Porsches and Harley Davidson, Indian and BMW motorcycles. A distinct experience at the age of 12 ignited his future life as an artist. In 1969, he and his brothers went to the Calder exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum. Always before told “not to touch” when in a museum, this time the docent said, “Go ahead son, make it move; bring it to life.” In that moment the world of art expanded to include more than objects hanging on walls or sitting on shelves gathering dust. Among his many accomplishments, Amos is particularly proud of the following public art installations: five kinetic sculptures displayed along the Embarcadero as part of the San Diego Unified Port District’s Urban Tree programs (2005 through 2010), two kinetic sculptures acquired for the permanent collection of the Wolfstein Sculpture Park at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, one kinetic sculpture acquired for the permanent collection of the San Diego Unified Port District; displayed in Tidelands Park in Coronado.
