Islanders score late to defeat old rival

After seeing an early four-goal lead evaporate, after falling behind by two goals in overtime, the Coronado High girls water polo team mounted the ultimate comeback for its second straight section Division II title. The top-seeded Islanders scored all three goals in the second of two overtime periods to top No. 2 Bishop’s 12-11 last night at La Jolla High’s Coggan Pool. Coronado won with a rally that hinged on a tying shot that Ashley Young practiced but hadn’t used in a game. “We were definitely worried (at the overtime intermission),” said Young, a junior who had three goals. “Anybody would be. But we found our focus again. We said, ‘This is what we’ve been training for.’ ” Coronado (23-9) prevailed in the fifth straight championship match against Bishop’s despite a standout effort by Knights senior Dominique Sardo, who scored five goals and had three steals to set the section career record (486).
