Our family received a ‘block party flyer’ last week on our doorstep for a neighborhood get together on Saturday. It was to take place on the 900 block of “I” and everyone within ‘shouting distance’ was invited. It was a huge success.
The directions were pretty simple:
– Bring a dish to share
– Bring a few chairs
– Bring something to grill on the grill (BBQs provided)
– Bring your favorite drink
– Get to know your neighbors
About 50 people showed up and more food than a 100 people could eat. Not only that, but one of the hosts brought out his microphone and guitar and started playing/singing tunes while folks danced and sang along. People of all ages got into the action and smiles and good conversation were everywhere. Kids played ball on the lawn next door and made multiple passes at the overflowing dessert table. I kept looking for Norman Rockwell to be capturing the moment somewhere on canvas.
My favorite quote: I’ve been living on this block for 14 years and I’ve never met some of my neighbors…this is great!
Hats off to Robb and Chris for putting it together and all the ‘within shouting distance’ neighbors for attending and having a great time.
I hope more Coronado blocks get together for events like these and venture out a bit more. It’s important to know your neighbors for many reasons and this is a perfect town to make it happen.
