Last week, the Islander Girls’ Varsity Basketball team played three games, resulting in two wins and a loss. On Tuesday, the team traveled to Crawford High School for a high-scoring game on behalf of the Islanders. Junior Lauren White was their top scorer with eighteen points, as well as two rebounds, followed by senior Sarah Barns with thirteen points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Junior Rosemarie Czerewko proved to be a force on defense with three steals and eight rebounds. Leading the team in rebounds was junior Gianna Spatafore with twelve. The final score read 56-18, a win for the Islanders.
The following Thursday, Coronado hosted Madison High School; both teams had been undefeated in the City League thus far. The Islanders, unfortunately, fell short on offense and struggled in shooting. Barns led the team with eight points and six rebounds, followed by Spatafore with six points and ten rebounds. Senior Regina Czerewko distinguished herself on offense with four points and six steals. Madison took the victory 26-41 and maintains their first-place ranking in the City League.
The Islanders recovered from that loss when they played Kearny High School on Saturday. White led her team again in baskets, with fourteen points. Senior Jimena Mendez also had an excellent offensive game with twelve points and six steals. Monk played an overall versatile game with ten points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. The Islanders defeated Kearny 55-28.
The team currently holds a season record of sixteen wins to five losses and a league record of six wins to one loss.
