Football: CHS Ends Successful Season with Loss to Chula Vista

On Friday night, November 4, the Islanders football team played their last game of the season in the CIF Division IV Playoffs against Chula Vista High School. In this single elimination tournament, Coronado hosted the first round going in with a strong record of seven wins to three losses. The first quarter procured the most even results between the two teams. Chula Vista scored the first touchdown of the game, followed by a five-yard pass by Colter Maldonado completed by James Witthoft to score a touchdown. Ending the quarter 7-7, Chula Vista gained momentum and scored a touchdown and a field goal to go up 17-7 at the end of the half.

Unfortunately, the Islanders did not score after the first quarter. Chula Vista scored twice more to win the game 31-7 and will be advancing to quarterfinals of CIF Playoffs. For what turned out to be his last high school game, senior Bryce Alexander was a consistent force on defense all season, with over a hundred tackles in eleven games. On the offensive end, Witthoft and Maldonado proved to be an excellent duo and will continue to dominate next season. “The success we had, both on and off the field this year, is nothing short of amazing,” shares Coach Kurt Hines.

Congratulations to the Islanders for an outstanding season record of 7 wins to 4 losses!
