“A Wrinkle In Time” is a Walt Disney Pictures production adventure fantasy film, based on the award-winning 1962 novel by Madeleine L’Engle, that follows a young girl’s quest to find her father.
With a star studded cast including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine, along with a $103 million dollar budget, expectations were high. I took my 11 year-old son to watch it, excited for the combination of science fiction and fantasy. Unfortunately, we both left the movie theater a bit disappointed. While many of the visual effects were incredible and there was a positive message conveyed throughout, the movie was slow and the acting didn’t invoke a connection to the characters. The vibrant colors and design of the planets in the movie were stunning, but the character dialogue felt somewhat forced. When the movie ended, my son said, “I didn’t really like it, it was boring and there wasn’t any action.” In some ways I agreed, but then I took the opportunity to start the conversation about self-confidence and accepting unique qualities in yourself and others, just what the movie was trying to convey.
The movie had the potential to inspire children to be excited about learning science and physics, and how they could make discoveries that could change the world. While its focus on kindness and love is important, I thought it could have easily brought in so much more.
