Leading up to this weekend’s tournament in La Jolla, Islander girls’ volleyball played two league games this week, resulting in two tough losses. On Tuesday, Patrick Henry, a Division-III team, hosted Coronado. Patrick Henry defeated the Islanders in three straight sets, scores being 14-25, 18-25, and 20-25.

After Tuesday’s tough loss, the girls’ went up against top Division-II team, University City. Although Coronado will compete in Division-III CIF, they have been playing against teams in the league above them for better competition and preparation for CIFs. The varsity team took University City to five sets, initially leading the game in the first two. The scores of those two sets, although close, were 25-23 and 25-22, but UC began to gain momentum in the following sets, winning the next two 17-25 and 16-25. This called for a fifth set tiebreaker, which unfortunately the Islanders lost. Much like the first two sets, the score was incredibly close at 13-15.

At the So Cal Invitational tournament this weekend, Coronado was prepared to play a series of competitive teams in the Silver Division. The first was Bonita Vista High School from Chula Vista. Beating them in their own gym, Coronado won in two easy sets. In the second round of the tournament, the Islanders played Otay Ranch High School, also from Chula Vista. The first set went to Coronado by a small three-point margin, 25-22. But they could not close the game against their opponents and lost the following two sets 19-25 and 9-15.

Senior Kareemah Hopkins brings her experience as the setter, practically the team’s “quarterback.” Along with senior Caroline Massie, who leads the team in digs, they have both provided depth to this year’s varsity team.

The season record is currently 6 wins to 8 losses, and the league record is 2 wins to 4 losses.

Next Games:
  • Tuesday, October 17 vs. Christian High School at Coronado @ 5:00 PM
  • Thursday, October 19 vs. Mission Bay High School at Mission Bay @ 5:00 PM
