You’ve most likely heard of the The Amazing Race for Children’s Wishes event that was started nine years ago by the Coronado Yacht Club, the Coronado Cays Yacht Club, and the Navy Yacht Club. The big event, on May 7 this year, along with supporting events ahead of time, raises money for Make-A-Wish and is presented by Make-A-Wish® San Diego. During the past years of the event, the main location has been shared between CYC and CCYC. This year it is coming back to CYC!! Jeff Jakus, in charge of outreach and partnerships for the event, says about the village location, “I personally think that it is a little more fun when we can include all the sights of the village and garner the hospitality and donations from all of our local merchants, residents, friends and families.”
Jakus goes on to say, “We have pulled out all the stops this year by bringing in Dagmar Midcap from Channel 7 News and Weather as our Emcee for the day’s events, as well as taking advantage of an ex-San Diegan Bill Menish (former Channel 7 News Anchor and Auctioneer Extraordinaire) being in Southern California for the weekend.”
A record breaking number of bike teams have been recruited for the main event. When you add up the teams, volunteers and local attendees, upwards of 500 people are expected to participate in some way; and these are not just any people – these are mostly Coronado people.

- Almost 100 wishes granted for Children with Life Threatening Illnesses
- Betsy Bondurant (CCYC) is Event Chair this year
- Bill Edwards (NYCSD) is Event Vice Chair and poised to become Chairman of our 10th Anniversary Event in 2018
- Jeff Jakus (CYC) is Outreach and Partnership Chair
- Make-A-Wish® San Diego (Chris Sichel) will be in attendance to start the race on May 7th
- Dagmar Midcap (San Diego Channel 7 News and Weather) will be Emcee on May 7th
- Bill Menish (former San Diego Channel 7 News Anchor) will be auctioneer on May 7th
- Live auction items include: 1 week bare boat charter in the British Virgin Islands, Holland America Cruise, Padres VIP Suite, SeaDream Yacht Club Cruise, Fly with Former Blue Angel CO Gil Rud, and so much more!
- Complete silent auction and target raffle
- Live music provided by local standout band Wag the Dog
- Lunch provided by CYC
- Wish Kids and Wish Families will be in attendance
- The public is welcome, invited and encouraged – no fee to come to the event, donations accepted
