Stan Searfus Organizing Beach Cleanup and Letter Writing Campaign

Coronado beachWith a passion for surfing and our oceans, Stan Searfus is organizing a campaign of surfers and volunteers in order to improve their environment of recreation: the ocean. Gathering as many volunteers as possible, Stan has sent out a letter to the Coronado High School and Coronado Middle School surf clubs, as well as the Coronado Surfing Association, promoting the event.

He has planned a full day of excitement with rewarding volunteer activities. Bright and early in the morning on Sunday, April 9, 2017, volunteers will meet at 8am in the public parking lot at the foot of Avenida Del Mando in the Coronado Shores Condominium complex. They will then organize small groups to cover the beach from the rocks at the Del and south to Gator Beach. Stan recommends that volunteers bring gloves as well as other tools that would be useful. “I am looking for 3-4 wheelbarrows and shovels to scoop up the sand in the parking lot,” says Stan. Since some could also go onto the base area beach for cleanup there, volunteers should bring their military Common Access Card if they have one.

In addition to the cleanup, a potluck breakfast will be served at 10am. A sign-up system will be arranged to organize donations. During breakfast, there will also be a station set up to write letters to politicians in an effort to address the issues of sewage spills coming from across the border. These spills from the Tijuana River have made our oceans unsafe and must be resolved in order for people to enjoy our beautiful beaches.

surfersThe event will conclude with a surfing session for all who wish to participate.

As a way to give back to the community and our environment, all who enjoy our beaches should come out and support this cause. Stan says, “This effort is important because the surfers here in Coronado are the ones that use the beach regularly and we are the ones who should help take care of it. When the water is dirty, we are the ones who get sick. That’s why we will write to our elected officials so they understand what is going on here on our coastline.” Help keep our environment in prime condition by getting involved in this rewarding experience.
