The island of Coronado is known for its beautiful beaches, iconic views of downtown, local festivities and great shopping and restaurants. However, it is not commonly known that this 13.5 square mile island is a strong solar community and has the potential to achieve 100 percent energy independence.
“Coronado is a leading city of solar power in our state, and has the potential to be fully energy independent by utilizing available roof space on homes and businesses on the island,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power.
Coronado would need to cover the equivalent to 13 percent of its total 13.5 square miles, or one square mile, with solar panels. According to California Solar Initiative (CSI) data, Coronado only had 19,604-watts of solar installed in 2007, but in the last seven years, Coronado has increased the amount of solar produced by 712,897-watts, for a grand total of 732,501-watts of solar currently installed on the island.
In 2009, Sullivan Solar Power ran the Coronado Solar Program, increasing the amount of solar power in Coronado by 78,600-watts and giving residents an opportunity to earn $0.20 per watt installed. The program increased the amount of solar on the island by 25 percent in just one year. The Coronado Solar Program started the solar movement in Coronado as more and more people jumped on board as they began seeing the benefits and savings their friends and neighbors were receiving.
Although that program concluded five years ago, there are new ways that Coronado residents can adopt solar energy. The Coronado City Council is going to be opting into a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing program, called HERO, at the end of this year. This program will allow Coronado property owners to go solar and repay their solar loan through their property taxes. This financing program is based on the equity in a home and mortgage payments, not on credit scores. This gives many residents who previously did not qualify for solar financing before the opportunity to go solar.
Sullivan Solar Power is committed to helping Coronado achieve 100 percent energy independence and is providing free a workshop to help educate the community about solar power. This free workshop is taking place on Saturday, August 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Coronado Public Library (640 Orange Ave, Coronado). Residents will learn about solar technology, financial savings, payback periods, how to evaluate solar companies, owning versus leasing a system and the HERO program. It is free and open to the public and lunch will be provide for attendees. For more information, call 1-800-SULLIVAN or visit www.SullivanSolarPower.com.
