Begin Again is a charming little picture of an indie film, that highlights the talent of songwriters and how it affects their lives. Gretta’s (Knightley) boyfriend of five years, Dave (Levine), has hit stardom, and with it, Gretta has hit the bottom. Subsequently, Dan (Ruffalo), a long-time producer and record company owner has been fired, is separated from his wife, and is dealing with an onset of alcoholism. When Dan hears Gretta’s songs at a local bar, he becomes determined to make an album with her, even if they have to record outside, among different spots in New York City.
The movie is a definite must-see for music lovers, but its elongated and sappy love-based storyline may override the endearing qualities of the stars in the film for other fans. Moviegoer Melissa Stubbs said, “It’s a story about second chances and new beginnings.”
