Coronado police investigate string of arson cases

Coronado police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a man wanted for questioning for arson, vandalism, and petty theft, after surveillance video showed him taking a package from a residence and holding a newspaper, both of which were later used to create an incendiary device. The fire, which also contained a small propane tank and a wreath taken from the door of a nearby residence, was left burning in a raised cinderbox planter near a residential complex at 1101 First Street. The video shows that the subject was in the area between 4:33 and 6:04 a.m. on December 10th.

The video also shows the subject throwing a concrete ashtray into the fountain at Centennial Park.

In addition to the fire on December 10th, three other fires were set in Coronado between December 9th and December 17th. The first, between December 9th and 10th, involved a pile of dead, discarded palm leaves set on fire near the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Loma Avenue. On December 11th, Coronado police were called to the scene of a recyclable bin on fire in the 1000 block of Park Place. And between December 15th and 17th, a gallon sized bottle and paper towels were burned in the 1000 block of A Avenue.

Coronado police are investigating these incidents as related. Anyone with information about these fires or the subject pictured is asked to contact the Coronado Police Department at 619-522-7350.
