National Guard soldiers land at Coronado as Iraq war ends

About 70 California National Guard soldiers finished a yearlong tour in Iraq Thursday, landing in Coronado.

When Sgt. Sahren Salgado stepped off the plane at North Island Naval Air Station, she was wrapped in a hug from her 16-year-old son Mikee. This age-old scene of military homecoming has often been repeated in San Diego during the last decade of war. But the return of the 640th Aviation Support Battalion — the last aviation support battalion left in Iraq — also brought the U.S. one flight closer to ending the war.
