SAN DIEGO — The Coronado Bay Bridge could be seeing a facelift, but residents and the Coronado City Council are divided on a new proposal to remove the old toll booths.
More than 83,000 cars per day use the Coronado Bridge, according to city officials. But once over the bridge, drivers are greeted with empty toll booths serving no real purpose.
“I’d rather have some greenery, palm trees, whatever. Would look a lot nicer since those toll booths are not going to be used anymore,” said Francisco Cebrero, who works in Coronado.
Drivers like Cebrero may get their wish.
Toll fees ended in 2002 after the cost of the bridge was paid off, but the booths were left behind. Many call it an eyesore to the beautiful coastal city.
