IN PERSON: Ranger in charge of local state beaches still a lifeguard at heart

Brian Ketterer was a former Coronado lifeguard for 9 years.

CARLSBAD —- As administrators go, you could think of Brian Ketterer as a lifeguard in superintendent’s clothing.

Technically, Ketterer is a California park ranger, with the beige shirt and state-bear patches on both shoulders, but as superintendent of the north coastal sector of San Diego County state parks, he tops the chain of command.

Working out of Carlsbad’s first fire station —- a house built in 1942 on the corner of Coast Highway and Beech Avenue —- Ketterer is responsible for 14.8 miles of shoreline encompassing Torrey Pines and two of the five busiest state campgrounds in California.
