Tennis: CHS Boys, Three Matches, One Win, Two Losses

After taking a week off, CHS boys’ tennis takes off running the following week with three straight games. The first match—on Wednesday—the varsity team faced Francis Parker for a close match on all fronts. With Line 2 Singles player Eric Katz out this week, Diego Yañez, Andres de la Lama, and Jorge Yañez challenged Parker’s singles players. In the first round of matches, Diego Yañez lost in a close set against their Line 1 player, 4-6. Yañez then retired from an injury the rest of the match. His brother, Jorge Yañez, and de la Lama both won their first matches 6-3 and 6-2, respectively. Subbing in for Diego Yañez, Carlos Solloa had two tough losses against Parker’s Line 2 and Line 3 singles. Jorge Yañez lost to their Line 1 singles and defeated the Line 2 singles, while de la Lama won the rest of his matches.

With Coronado leading five sets to four, the doubles had to win another five sets to close out the match. Francis Parker had stacked their doubles teams with their top players, giving Coronado’s doubles a particularly difficult challenge. Line 1 doubles, Ryan Wood and Isaac del Rincon, defeated their Line 3 doubles, and Line 2 doubles, Yannick Peterhans and Jake Lamb, pulled out a win against their Line 1 doubles team. Unfortunately, Coronado’s Line 3 doubles, Santiago Gonzalez and Anibal Ramirez, were not able to get any wins, and Francis Parker won 7-11.

On Thursday, the varsity team went up to Scripps Ranch to play them for the second time this season. The singles lineup (Diego Yañez, Jorge Yañez, and Santiago Gonzalez) won nine out of their nine sets. Once again, the doubles teams had to close out the win for Coronado. Line 1 Doubles team, Wood and del Rincon, won two out of their three matches, while Line 2 (Solloa and Lamb) and Line 3 (Ramirez and de la Lama) each defeated the Line 3 doubles team. The final score against Scripps Ranch was 13-5.

The third and final match of the week was played against La Jolla High School after their match before spring break was canceled. Losing their top doubles players to the singles lineup, Coronado struggled in doubles, winning only two of the nine sets, while the singles only won five of nine sets. The final score was 7-11.

Next Week’s Matches:
  • Tuesday, April 10 vs. Point Loma High School @ 3:30 PM (Home)
  • Thursday, April 12 vs. Patrick Henry High School @ 3:30 PM (Away)
