CHS Cross Country Competes in Dana Hills Invite

Madden Hundley and Teresa Perez at the starting line.

Last Saturday, Dana Point High School hosted approximately 5,000 runners from schools all around the state. There were three different divisions for all grade levels, but as always, Coronado competed with the fastest. Every race was run on the same 3-mile course.

The previous week, Teresa Perez and Madden Hundley performed exceptionally well at the Woodbridge Invitational. This allowed them to compete in the girls’ Division I Senior race, even though they are both juniors. Over 200 girls competed in this race, featuring seniors from all over the state, as well as any other girls fast enough to compete with the best. Teresa finished 8th among this competitive group with a time of 17:09 (Mile Time: 5:43). Madden followed Teresa with a time of 19:20 (Mile Time: 6:27). The freshman girls ran in the Division II Freshmen race. Abigail Hundley placed 17th out of 183 runners, finishing in 20:16 (Mile Time: 6:45).

The boys’ team ran in all the Division II races. Grant Hawthorne ran in the freshman race, placing 21st of 264 finishers with a time of 17:40 (Mile Time: 5:53). Finishing in 16:47 (Mile Time: 5:36), sophomore Cole Mullins placed 28th out of 235 finishers. Brad Busby placed 10th in the junior race out of 215 runners with a time of 15:54 (Mile Time: 5:18), followed by Connor Jaynes who placed 22nd, clocking 16:26 (Mile Time: 5:28). In the senior race, Ian Hurlburt finished in 16:22 (Mile Time: 5:27), placing 34th of 195 runners.

Brad Busby finishes his race on the track.

The day before, other runners competed in the South Bay Invite. The top performer was freshman Jessica Ehret. She finished the 2.5-mile course in 9th place, with a time of 16:45 (Mile Time: 6:42) in the girls’ varsity race, as opposed to the Frosh/Soph race for better competition, says Coach Green. She was followed by junior Natalya Gomez who clocked 17:13 (Mile: 6:53).

We wish them luck next week at Morley Field, as they compete in their first league meet.

Next Meet:
