The 40-year-old theater company, San Diego County’s third-largest, also plans to sell a restored property near its home theater in Coronado, and move the offices housed there into another building originally intended as a rehearsal space.
Robert Smyth, the producing artistic director of Lamb’s, said in an interview that the layoff is only the third in the theater’s history.
“There’s real pain here, because these are people who are real friends and have contributed very much,” Smyth said. “There’s also a spirit of feeling a little hobbled. A lot of us have worked together for over 30 years.”
Smyth said the company had hoped that earlier trims would tide Lamb’s over until the economy improved. But a continued sag in donations and ticket sales made deeper cuts necessary.
