Naturally, fans of the Spiderman series will find it impossible not to compare Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Peter Parker against Toby Maguire’s. The similarities only go as far as the general storyline, however. While Maguire seemed to hide behind the nerdy spectacles of Peter Parker until he needed to suit up, Garfield embodies the confidence of Spiderman even when he walks the streets of New York. The change is refreshing for any Spiderman fans, but may take some getting used to for the die-hard original fans.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is, according to moviegoer Melissa Stubbs, “cinematically unbelievable, but the storyline seemed a bit discombobulated. The endearing chemistry between Andrew Garfield [Peter Parker] and Emma Stone [Gwen Stacy] is what carries the film.” The two-and-a-half hour movie is an ongoing battle between Spiderman’s biggest fan turned biggest enemy, and Peter Parker’s old friend, Harry Osborne (Dane DeHaane). When Osborne’s father dies and Harry takes over the company, chaos ensues as slimy business partners work against him and he learns that he is dying. In attempt to save himself, Obsorne teams up with Spidey’s nemesis, Max Dillon/Electro (Jamie Foxx). While New York City is in dire need of protection, and Spiderman tries to give that aid, Parker simultaneously unravels secrets of his deceased father’s scientific work and tries to save his love life.
The movie carries itself well for its duration, with no overly long parts or boring scenes. The action will satisfy fans of the comic books, the romance will satisfy the girlfriends dragged along to the theater, and the ending is a “definite tear-jerker,” said moviegoer Jordan Narramore.
