The Coronado Ferry Landing is the destination for a full day of sun, shopping, dining, and the best views of San Diego. Sit down for a meal at your favorite restaurant, then enjoy shopping at one of the many unique boutiques. A favorite for both tourists and locals is Miss Match.
The Miss Match difference
“We tell a story with our collections and the way we curate things,” says owner Tally Bercovitz. This includes color coordinating and envisioning a woman’s closet. “We take the guessing out of it by arranging racks, tables, and mannequins to put a wardrobe together. These are the kind of experiences that you won’t get at a department store. We take the overwhelmingness out of it.”
How Miss Match became the place for multigeneration shopping
It was important for Tally that Miss Match be a place for every woman. She specifically found that those in the middle ages were the forgotten shoppers. “I turned 50, and I saw more and more that there was nothing for me when I went shopping. It was either like a 20-year-old or the St. John woman. Either you had a $20 budget or a $2,000 budget.”
Miss Match aims not only to fill the gap but also to show that stylish pieces are for everyone. She provides examples. “If you take a basic white button-down, which we all have in our closet, a 30-year-old woman is going to wear that differently than a 50-year-old woman, perhaps, or even a 60-year-old woman. It’s taking a classic piece and giving it a twist, so it still resonates with the generation. If you take a black leather skirt that’s a midi and you put a slit down the side, I would wear that, and a 30-year-old will wear that. But she may wear that with a fishnet stocking, and I wouldn’t.”
The entire Miss Match team embodies this knowledge and enthusiasm for fashion. “We’re super excited about what we do. We get to style women who are mostly on vacation, and they’re in great moods. We educate ourselves on body types and on cuts. When an item comes in, we all look at it and make mental notes about which body type it would suit and how we embrace a woman’s uniqueness. Simply put, we freaking love this. We get excited.”
Spring and summer trends
In addition to classic pieces, Miss Match stays on top of trends. Hot on the spring and summer wardrobe list is printed and floral denim, as well as geometric denim. It’s playful with faded prints. One of Miss Match’s most popular items is the Bellamy jean.
Also big in fashion are flowy sets like a halter top with linen pants. Cardigans are making a comeback. “A thin cardigan can be layered and easily tied around your waist. It’s great for travel and for San Diego,” Tally says. As far as accessories, straw purses with beaded embellishments are the way to go. “Crochet has always been around, but this year, it’s taking a very modern, kind of edgy approach.” One of Tally’s favorite pieces is the Bermuda denim shorts, which are making a fierce comeback.
Donations and discounts
Miss Match is committed to supporting non-profits both on and off the island, including the San Diego chapter of Breakthrough T1D for juvenile diabetes, and donations to various other local organizations.
For Coronado residents, Miss Match offers a 10% locals discount. They also run a monthly promotion on the Coronado Happenings Facebook group, when, on that day only, customers can come in for a special discount, e.g. 50% off, or a free gift with purchase — sharing local love.
