Last week, the Islander Boys’ Golf team played Point Loma High School away at Balboa Golf Course for a difficult match in the rain. When rain falls on a golf match, grips typically become wet, making it difficult to drive the ball well. Despite this deficit, “both teams had a good performance,” says Coach Stuart Gordon. Finishing the course first for the Islanders was freshman Easton Phillips with 38 strokes. Freshman Jake McLaughlin followed Phillips, shooting a score of 41 strokes. Both of these players handled the narrow fairways well and were able to get on the greens fast. Senior Saul Chacon and junior Javier Hernandez both finished the course in 45 strokes, followed by juniors Gino Frederick and Matt Schnappauf who finished with respective scores of 51 and 52 strokes. Having home course advantage, Point Loma took a small-margin victory, 220-212.
The golf team currently holds a record of two wins to four losses.
