Soccer: Excellent Season for CHS Girls Ends at CIF Semi-Finals

On Saturday, February 16, the Islander Girls’ Varsity Soccer team played a neutral game against El Capitan High School in the quarter-finals of the Division-III CIF Playoffs. This season, the Islanders have been playing excellent defense, resulting in low-scoring games. In goal, junior Sydney Neibert blocked all six of El Capitan’s attempts to score, while the rest of Coronado’s defense stopped their forwards from even getting close to the goalie box. On offense, freshman Ella Oden scored her first goal of the season, with an assist by freshman Riley McGrath, to win the game, 1-0.

The Islanders would then continue onto the semi-finals to play against Serra High School on Wednesday, February 20. Unfortunately, Coronado’s defenders struggled to keep Serra out of their goal, resulting in a 0-2 loss. “It was obviously not the way we wanted to end the season,” comments Coach Costaglio, “but it’s still a season to be proud of. Last year we did not win a game and this year we made the ‘final four’ in CIF.” As a young team, next year’s season looks promising for the Islanders.

The team only dropped two matches throughout the entire season, in addition to Wednesday’s loss. They concluded the season with a record of eleven wins to three losses to six ties.

Congratulations to the Islanders for an outstanding season!
