Last Tuesday, the Islander Girls’ Basketball team hosted La Jolla High School for what proved to be a low-scoring game. As La Jolla is part of their league, Coronado needed this victory to be in the running for the City League title. On offense, team captain Sarah Barns led the team in baskets with thirteen points, as well as eleven rebounds, followed by junior Lauren White with seven points and five rebounds. The final score read 37-31 for the Islanders.
On Friday night, the seniors were celebrated on their “Senior Night,” facing Crawford High School for their second league match of the week. The following graduating seniors were recognized for their unwavering dedication to the Islander Girls’ Varsity Basketball team:
In the first half, both teams played an offensively slow game, ending the first quarter 10-5 and the second 18-8. Senior Regina Czerewko prevented Crawford from even attempting to score. “Regina played really well defensively with fourteen steals, creating a lot of opportunities for us and making things difficult on the other team,” says Coach Toler Goodwin. “Lauren White and Sarah Barns have been leading us in scoring all season long, but it was the defensive pressure that Regina put on that allowed us to make these offensive opportunities possible.”
Czerewko shares, “I have a lot of passion to win when I’m on the court, and the fact that it was ‘Senior Night’ so that sort of added to the passion.”
Barns and White did, in fact, lead the Islanders on offense, with fourteen points and eight points, respectively, to help the Islanders take a 29-11 lead at the end of third quarter. Senior Kathryn Monk added seven points, while Czerewko added six more, in addition to her fourteen steals. The final scoreboard read 46-16, the Islanders’ tenth win in the City League and their 20th win of the season. This year is also Coach Goodwin’s twentieth season of coaching the Islander Girls’ Varsity Basketball team out of his thirty-two years of coaching basketball.
“If we beat Madison High School next week, we get to share the league title, so that’s our goal right now,” he shares.
Congratulations to Coach Goodwin for completing twenty years on the team, and good luck to the Islanders next as they play for the league title.
