Starting the season off with a tough tournament, the Islander Boys’ Varsity Basketball team maintained a 8-9 season record before last week. “As of late, we have found success winning five of our last six games,” comments Coach JD Laaperi. So far this season, senior Caden Gentry has been Coronado’s leading scorer, averaging sixteen points each game, followed by junior Mike Cunningham, averaging ten points each game. Leading in number of rebounds, senior Bryce Alexander has been averaging nine rebounds per game. Senior Bruen Roulier leads the Islanders in steals, with an average of three per game.

Last Tuesday, Coronado hosted San Diego High School for their third conference game of the season. “We lost in a game that was closer than the score might indicate,” says Coach Laaperi. Not having scored in the third quarter, San Diego was able to take a significant lead that resulted in their final margin of victory. The Islanders’ top scorers were Gentry, who shot twenty-five points, as well as Cunningham, who added seventeen. San Diego won by a fourteen-point margin, 51-65.

The following Saturday, the Islanders hosted Clairemont High School for the second conference game that week. “We defeated Clairemont by nine, but we were up by twenty-two when we pulled the starters with four minutes to go,” shares Coach Laaperi. “We didn’t shoot particularly well, and this is becoming a bit of a trend.” With excellent defense leading to many shooting opportunities in the second half, Coronado was able to gain a significant lead. Leading the team in points was Gentry (17), followed by Roulier (10). Roulier also played excellent defense with four blocks, four steals, and twelve rebounds. The final score read 59-50, a victory for the Islanders.

The team’s current season record is 9 wins to 10 losses and a conference record of 3 wins to 1 loss. They currently hold top standing in the City League, tied with Madison and San Diego High Schools.
