Last Tuesday, the Islander Girls’ Basketball team traveled to La Jolla High School for the fourth league game of the season. This game proved to be extremely close, as both teams fought for the lead in each quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Coronado trailed La Jolla 6-8, but by the end of the half, Coronado took the lead at 18-16. La Jolla then took the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Islanders 9-14. But they recovered from being down 27-30 and outscored the La Jolla 22-14. The final score read 49-44. The top scorer for the Islanders was senior Sarah Barns, who scored 25 (more than half) of her team’s points, with 14 rebounds. Senior Kathryn Monk and junior Lauren White each scored nine points.
On Saturday, the Islanders hosted Kearny High School, a complete turnaround from Tuesday. Coronado took an early lead at 14-5 in the first quarter. During the second quarter, they built a 25-point lead at 34-9, later holding Kearny scoreless in the third. Coronado took the decisive victory, 64-12. White was Coronado’s top scorer, with 19 points, as well as 6 rebounds. Following White was Barns, who shot ten points and had 7 rebounds. Junior Gianna Spatafore not only added six points to Coronado’s score, but she played exceptional defense with ten steals.
The team’s current season record is 14 wins to 4 losses, and their league record is 4 wins to no losses.
