On Friday night, the Islander varsity football team played their second-to-last game of the season against Hoover High School. So far, the Islanders have a record of six wins to two losses. After last week’s game against San Diego High School was called due to rain, Coach Hines and his team worked hard on their offensive line, exhibiting many rushing plays on Friday night.

The first touchdown of the game was a 17-yard run made by Nicholas Dunn, followed by a field goal kick by Mauricio Luna. Sophomore Ash Bibbes was the Islanders’ quarterback and recorded a total of 162 passing yards. To score the second touchdown, Bibbes threw a 45-yard pass to senior Caden Gentry, who outran Hoover’s defensive line.

Going into the second quarter 13-0, Coronado would score two more touchdowns before the end of the half. In a punt return by Hoover, Luna received the ball 56 yards from the goal and broke through Hoover’s defense to score another touchdown for the Islanders. Both teams continued to push on their offensive and defensive lines until junior Colter Maldonado received a 14-yard pass from Bibbes to go up 29-0.

After halftime, Hoover recovered and gained momentum on offense. Scoring two touchdowns with two conversions, the score read 27-16 by the end of the third quarter. To conclude the game, Bibbes through a 5-yard pass to junior James Witthoft to score the final touchdown — a 34-16 victory for the Islanders.

On defense, Bryce Alexander led the Islanders with seven tackles, followed by Tyler Buckley with four tackles.
