Security Bollards: In response to recent world events where common vehicles have been used as weapons at large public gatherings, the City has taken steps to improve safety and provide a more secure perimeter for City events. Crews have installed anchors for steel bollards along Orange Avenue, around the Fourth of July parade route. The bollards will be installed on July 4, starting at 8 a.m. A demonstration bollard was placed on First Street. The bollards will be installed where police barricades and vehicles had previously been positioned during the parade. The exception is the side streets, where in the past, one full block on either side of Orange was closed. With the bollards, those streets will be closed from Orange to the alley entrances. The alleys paralleling Orange Avenue will remain open during the event. Once the approximately 300 bollards are in place, those access points to Orange Avenue will be closed for the duration of the parade. The bollards will be removed following the conclusion of the parade by the Public Services cleanup crew as they work to restore Orange Avenue to its pre-parade condition, starting at First Street.

Hazardous Materials Cleanup:  Cleanup efforts following a June 4 garage fire that involved hazardous materials wrapped up on Saturday, June 9. Officials with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency assumed oversight of the cleanup on June 5 at the City’s request. EPA crews were able to retrieve more than 50 pounds of mercury discovered in the garage in an alley behind a home in the 400 block of Orange Avenue. The garage fire started at about 2:30 p.m. on June 4 and was put out within about 10 minutes. Fire Chief Jim Lydon said the entire garage, a section of the alley roadway, and all the debris from the fire were removed by an environmental cleanup contractor and taken to a certified hazardous materials waste site. The EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division is aware of the release. The EPA can’t speculate as to an individual’s motives for having mercury or devices containing mercury.

Fourth of July Holiday: The City is planning and preparing for its biggest holiday of the year – the Fourth of July. Coronado will observe the holiday on Wednesday, July 4, with an array of events, including a bike ride, a run/walk, rough water swim, a new Fun Run, a parade, a concert and art display at Spreckels Park and topped off with a fireworks show  (see schedule below). The new Fun Run hosted by the Islander Sports Foundation will head down Orange Avenue at approximately 9:15 a.m. After  Orange  is  closed  in preparation for the parade, runners will sprint from Fourth Street to Star Park Circle. This pre-parade run will last about fifteen minutes. Run volunteers will be positioned along the route to  keep  the  area  clear for  runners. Please be sure to use caution during the Fun Run as runners will be sprinting down Orange Avenue. The City reminds the community that some municipal facilities will remain open. Public Services crews will not sweep streets on the holiday. EDCO will not perform regular residential trash collection; there will be a one-day delay in trash pick-up.
