Track: Girls Get First Div II Title in CIF Finals

On Saturday, Coronado’s athletes competed in the CIF Track and Field Finals at Mt. Carmel High School, after qualifying in the various preliminary meets. Schools within the San Diego Section gathered to compete for division titles and spots in the State Meet next weekend. Prior to the meet, Coach George Green predicted that “Coronado would be in a close contest for the Girls’ Division II title with University City, and Alysah Hickey would lead the way for the Islanders.” Only the latter would be true, “the team title wasn’t close.”

Alysah Hickey (center) wins both the Long Jump and High Jump, breaking a school record with her Long Jump mark.

Hickey swept in both the Long Jump and the High Jump, with efforts of a soaring 19 feet-10.5 inches and 5 feet-6 inches, respectively. She PR’d in the long jump and broke her current school record of 19-5.5, and her mark was ranked as the No. 1 seed for the CIF State Meet. Her third individual event was the 100-meter dash, in which she placed second. Running the anchor-leg in the 4×100-meter relay, she, along with Ruthie Grant-Williams (first leg), Madison Shanks (second leg), and Abigail Whittemore (third leg), won this event with a school record time of 48.22 seconds.

Grant-Williams also competed in the High Jump, placing third with a mark of 5-4, and the Long Jump, taking eighth with a jump of 16-8. On the track, she ran in the 100-meter hurdles and took second place, clocking 15.34 seconds. “Although her hurdle time was faster than the school record she set at the Bronco Invite this season of 15.39, it gets an asterisk as there was a 2.6 meter per second tailwind,” says Coach Green.

Madison Shanks passes off the baton to Abigail Whittemore in the 4×100-meter relay to win this race along with Ruthie Grant-Williams and Alysah Hickey.

Teresa Perez was Coronado’s top athlete in the longer-distance track events. She placed fourth in the 1600-meter with 5:03.97 and fifth in the 800-meter and 3200-meter with respective times of 2:19.40 and 11:06.84. Sofia Van Arsdale also ran in the 800-meter, finishing in 2:20.11 in sixth place. In the 1600-meter, Madden and Abigail Hundley ran alongside Perez in the “A” heat, finishing with times of 5:16.99 and 5:23.20, respectively.

In each of the above-mentioned events, each team collected points for placing in the events. Hickey collected a total of twenty-eight points with her three individual events, along with ten points in the 4×100-meter relay. Grant-Williams won Coronado fifteen points, while Perez took thirteen with her events. With Van Arsdale’s sixth-place finish, the Islanders scratched in three more points.” A big swing in points for us came in the Discus Throw,” shares Coach Green. Victoria Perez was competing with one of University City’s athletes for third place to get six points. Unfortunately for University City, their athlete fouled out with her throw, and Perez took third place, along with six points for Coronado. Among the Division-II teams, Coronado totaled 75 points to win the Division II title, while University City was second with 61 points. Among all teams competing at the CIF Finals, Coronado was still on top, with Torrey Pines in second (74) and Olympian in third (71).

In the boys’ division, Ian Hurlburt continues his streak in the 800-meter race. He has not lost to a single athlete from San Diego this season and won this race at the CIF Finals with a time of 1:54.59. In the 1600-meter, Luke Klingenberg took eighth place, clocking 4:31.25.

Ian Hurlburt wins the 800-meter race and will be moving onto the CIF State Meet next weekend.

“Our State Meet entries are Hickey in both the High Jump and Long Jump, Grant-Williams in the High Jump, and Hurlburt in the 800-meter run,” says Coach Green.
