Track: At League Finals, Islanders Advance to CIF Prelims

Last week, Coach George Green took his team of athletes to the City League Finals held at Madison High School. This meet would determine which athletes would be named league champions in each event and which ones would advance to the CIF Preliminary Meet. Experiencing windy weather, most of the marks were skewed, impacting many of the athletes’ results.

Girls’ Events:

The Islander girls won most of the events they entered. Junior Teresa Perez won first place in the 800-meter, 1600-meter, and 3200-meter races, with respective times of 2:20.52, 5:08.50, and 11:17.68. Every single one of those times surpassed CIF standards; therefore, she will advance to the CIF Preliminaries. Also advancing to the Preliminaries in the 1600-meter is Madden Hundley who placed second behind Perez, with a time of 5:14.18. In the 800-meter, Sofia Van Arsdale also placed second and makes the cut, clocking 2:21.86.

The field events were dominated by new-to-Coronado student Victoria Perez, who won both the shot put and discus throw. Victoria Perez had previously set the record for the discus throw the week prior to the League Finals, throwing a distance of 119 feet-2 inches. At the Finals, her discus effort was 105-4, which was seven feet further than the second-place throw. Her shot put effort, however, not only won her first place in the event, but she broke the school record by over a foot and a half, PR’ing with 34-7.

Alysah Hickey also won her specialty events: the High Jump and Long Jump. Her leap in the high jump was measured at 5 feet-6 inches, while her long jump was 18-6. Moving on to the CIF Preliminaries with Hickey in these events, Ruthie Grant-Williams made marks of 5-4 (High Jump) and 16-7 (Long Jump). Hickey will also be advancing in the 100-meter, after placing second to an athlete from Madison High School.

“Because of their performances throughout the season, Teresa was named City League Female Track Athlete of the Year, and Alysah was named City League Female Field Athlete of the year by a unanimous vote of all the City League head coaches,” comments Coach Green.

Boys’ Events:

Competing in the boys’ events, Luke Klingenberg won the long-distance track events, both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter races. With respective times of 4:35.08 and 10:05.90, he will move on to the CIF Preliminaries. Brad Busby placed second in the 3200-meter, clocking 10:11.01 and also moves on.

Ian Hurlburt won his specialty run, the 800-meter race, with a time of 1:58.22 and will be advancing. Hurlburt also ran in the 4×400-meter relay race, along with Max Fuller, Chris Russell, and Klingenberg. The latter three athletes ran the first three legs, all around 54 seconds, when Hurlburt pulled through in the last leg in 49.4 seconds to win this event and qualify for CIFs. The 4×100-meter relay team (comprised of Shane Alihan, Hurlburt, Fuller, and Nicholas Dunn) finished second behind Madison, clocking 44.35 collectively.

The only other athlete who qualified was Liam Casey in the High Jump. His leap was measured at 5 feet-8 inches.

Congratulations to all of the athletes who advanced, and good luck to them at the CIF Preliminaries at Mt. Carmel High School.
