On February 9, Christ Church Day School held their annual fundraising gala at the Coronado Community Center and it was a tremendous success. Based on the fun had by all the previous year, this year’s gala was attended by about 200 people, and was again a night of dancing to a DJ, dining, and bidding. This years theme was “Love Is In The Air.”
Nancy Funk, head of the school, shared that the evening was truly a community event. It was attended by church members, staff, friends, and alumni. Lots of fun was had by all and over $72,000 was raised at the event through the live and silent auctions and a generous donation of $10,000 from the CCDS Thrift Store directly to the scholarship fund. The auction items ranged from small items to travel experiences. There were trips to Hawaii and Mexico with other more local excursions and experiences garnering excellent bidding. Many generous sponsors, and countless volunteer hours put in by the gala committee who works all year long, created a successful and enjoyable event.
Highly sought-after auction items are the unique art pieces created by the students in each classroom. Under the direction of the art teacher, each child in each classroom creates a piece around their classroom’s selected theme. Upon completion, all of the pieces are incorporated into one piece of art per room. They are beautiful and one of a kind. The children enjoy creating the pieces and they are the auction items the guests most look forward to bidding on, and hopefully winning, each year.
This year Christ Church Day School, a Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited school, celebrates its 60th anniversary of providing an academic education to children from Jr. K, Pre-K, Kindergarten to sixth grade in Coronado. The school offers very small class sizes, with a maximum of 16 students, which is almost half the size of the public school class sizes. The small school, 97 total students, has high academic standards. A portion of the monies raised through the gala goes toward a scholarship fund to enable students who qualify and have a financial need attend the school.
