Even though the Track and Field season began just this week, some of Coronado’s athletes traveled last weekend to compete in pre-season meets. Alysah Hickey and Ruthie Grant-Williams ran in the Simplot Game hosted at Idaho State University. This meet has become “North America’s premier indoor high school track and field meet,” says Coach Green. Running in the 60-meter dash, Hickey placed fifth overall with a time of 7.70 seconds, among the various heats for this event. Hickey also competed in the long jump, placing tenth overall with a distance of seventeen feet, five inches. Grant-Williams PR’d in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.37, placing fifteenth overall.
In Arcadia, CA, Teresa Perez and Sofia Van Arsdale both ran in the Winter Classic’s 600-meter race. To compete in this race, athletes had to match a statewide standard mark in a qualifying meet. Perez, running in the fastest heat, lost a few seconds at the beginning of the race but managed to pull through to place seventh overall. Perez PR’d with a time of 1:38.07. Van Arsdale ran in the second heat of the 600-meter event to place third in this heat. Her time of 1:41.19 earned her twelfth place overall in the event. “Van Arsdale was one of only two freshman girls in the race,” says Coach Green. “The other one finished 31st.”
Next on the agenda is training for the upcoming season and assigning athletes to their specialty events.
