On Tuesday, Coronado boys varsity basketball played their first game of the season against their rival, Point Loma High School, during a “Blackout” (Coronado students filled the stands wearing all black). In previous games, Coronado has had a constant struggle on the offensive end. This struggle carried over, and Coronado was down 2-14 at the end of the first half. “We didn’t knock down shots, and we struggled to get open shots,” says Coach Laaperi. “From a points-per-game perspective, we are the top in the league defensively but bottom of the league offensively.” In the fourth quarter, Coronado was able to keep the game in one possession, but the Islanders lost 27-31.
At only 6’2″, team captain Bruen Roulier successfully rebounded and defended players that were much taller than him. Junior Ryan Herman had four steals and three assists, while Nathan Dorow led the team offensively with five points, three steals, and two rebounds. Coronado will play Point Loma again on February 15 at home.
On Friday, the varsity team played another tough away game against Scripps Ranch. By the end of the first half, the scored was tied at 20-20. The third quarter, once again, showed Coronado’s weakness on the offense, as Scripps Ranch outscored them 6-21. Unable to come back, the final score was 44-52, giving Scripps Ranch the second win of the season against Coronado.
