On Wednesday night, the Coronado Boys’ Varsity team hosted El Capitan High School in a hard-fought match. The score of the first half reflected a strong defense on behalf of Coronado, keeping their opponents at eleven points. “Unfortunately turnovers on the offensive end limited our offensive opportunities,” said Coach Laaperi. “We had a chance to put that game away in the second quarter but weren’t able to do so.” By the second half, El Capitan began to gain momentum and outscored Coronado 14-15 in the third quarter. Going into the fourth quarter, Coronado kept a ten-point margin at 37-27.

“They made a nice run in the second half, but some key baskets by Bruen Roulier, Myles Manning, Caden Gentry, and Nathan Dorow in the fourth quarter sealed the victory,” commented Laaperi. Gentry led the team on offense with twenty-two points, followed by Manning with fifteen points. Josef Perez led the defense with four total steals.

For the second game of the week, Scripps Ranch came to Coronado on Friday for the Islanders’ first Eastern League game. This proved to be a low-scoring game for Coronado. By the end of the first half, Scripps Ranch led by three points at 21-18. The second half favored Coronado in both quarters, tying the game 34-34. This meant that the game was to go into overtime, applying pressure on both teams. Unfortunately, Coronado’s offense could not pull through with a win, losing 36-44.

The Varsity team’s record is now eight wins to four losses.

Next Week’s Games:

  • Friday, January 12 vs. Christian High School @ 7:30 PM (Away)
