On Friday, December 8, the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team dominated Sweetwater High School, a tough team from National City; which was good preparation for the Coronado Holiday Invitational the following weekend. Every year, Coronado High School hosts this tournament and invites teams from all over the San Diego Section. The first round of the tournament for the boys was on Friday the 15th against Castle Park High School from the South Bay Area.

“We weren’t as sharp as we were a week ago against Sweetwater,” commented Coach Laaperi about Friday’s game. At halftime, Coronado led Castle Park by 34 points. But by the end of the second half, the final score was 64-40, as Coronado had let their opponents gain traction. “It is a good lesson in not playing to the level of the opponent but rather playing our brand of basketball regardless of who we are competing against.” Senior Kameron Sanders led the team on offense, with 10 points total, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

On Saturday the 16th, Coach Laaperi noticed a change on both the offense and defense, as there was collectively a more focused effort by the team. Defensively, Coronado was able to keep Fallbrook High School at a minimum, having only scored 28 points total. “Anytime you do that in a 32-minute high school game, you have to be pleased with the effort on the defensive end,” commented Coach Laaperi. Junior Caden Gentry led the team in shots with 22 points total. Myles Manning also contributed offensively with 18 points total.

The current season record is 4 wins and no losses.

Upcoming Games:
