After pre-season training, the girls’ tennis team is back on the court with their first match against Point Loma High School. With a convincing win of fifteen sets to three, Coach Rob Moore was impressed all around with the team’s efforts. Singles players Hannah Quirk and Summer Vu swept all of their matches, six sets total. Line 3 Singles player Tiana French won her first match and lost a close set in her second match. Sinaia Haskal filled in for Tiana in the last set and won 6-4.

The doubles teams prevailed just as successfully, winning seven of the nine sets played. “With only two days of practice before this match, I am still trying to determine the doubles pairings to use for the season,” says Coach Moore. Starting at Line 1 Doubles were Virginia Beall and Elsa Östermarker, who won all three of their matches. Starting at Line 2 were two new freshmen, Ellie Johnson and Marla Steel. Ellie and Marla won two of their matches, dropping a set against the Line 1 Pointer doubles team. Olivia Strong and Lily Vu were an especially strong doubles team, Coach Moore comments, as they only lost two games in both of their sets. They were subbed out for Samantha Russell and Mikaela Sacks in the third match, losing another close set of 6-4.

“I expected we might have some first match jitters going on for our first match,” says Coach Moore. “We are very deep and the hard job for me is to ensure as much playing time for all of my players. We have a lot of fine-tuning to do and I definitely see us as one of the top two teams in our league.” Coronado High School is in Western League, one of the two strongest leagues in the county. Last year, the team finished in seventh place out of 162 teams, and this year, Coach Moore expects even better results. We wish them luck throughout the rest of their season.
