I am writing this letter to inform fellow residents about an upcoming Active Transportation Plan report to the City Council regarding proposed major changes to our city. This includes the potential issues of additional bicycle lanes throughout our town (1st, 10th, Alameda and Pomona), additional signage, possible green ways parallel to Orange Avenue on “C” and “I”, a possible shared use bike path down one lane on each side of Orange Avenue, median lines or median green space at the intersection of Isabella and Ocean, etc. None of these issues have been decided upon yet, but it is essential for local Coronado residents to understand what the future may hold for our community.
Last week I attended the 5th Stakeholder Advisory committee meeting working on the Active Transportation Plan for the city of Coronado. What I took away from the meeting is that the Active Transportation Plan clearly sets out a deep division within our community on two levels. The first is between residents who live in Coronado and the tourists who temporarily visit our city. The second is between bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. Irrespective of your views and which side you might support, it is essential that all sides be represented at public hearings on this issue that will take place from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Monday, 19 June in the Winn Room at the Library. We Coronado residents cannot complain about the outcome of this committee’s work if we do not actively take part in the decisions that are to be put forward to the City Council.
The quiet residential environment that we live in is going to be deeply affected by the results of this report. The most important comment that I took away from the meeting was that City staff need to have significant input and buy-in from Coronado residents prior to the Committee submitting a final proposal to the City Council.
Get active fellow Coronadoans! Attend the 19 June public meeting on the Active Transportation Plan.
