The Coronado Historical Association will host Brigadier General R.G. Head, USAF (Ret.) on Veteran’s Day Friday, November 11th at 5:15pm at the Coronado Historical Museum.

BGen Head will discuss his newly published biography, Oswald Boelcke: Germany’s First Fighter Ace and Father of Air Combat.  His slides show the dramatic changes wrought by aviation in World War I and the impact of these few intrepid aviators on our history. One of his displays which you can see and touch is a replica of the Funeral Pillow with Boelcke’s medals that the Red Baron carried at Boelcke’s funeral. The book was just endorsed by the US World War I Centennial Commission.

A graduate of the US Air Force Academy, BGen Head is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours. One of the first fighter pilots in Vietnam, he flew 325 combat missions in the A-1 Skyraider for which he earned the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters.

BGen Head served as the Deputy Commander of NATO’s FIFTH Allied Tactical Air Force in Italy and squadron commander of F-4 Phantom IIs in the Philippines. He and his wife, Carole, currently live in Coronado. He was most recently honored by the City of Coronado on the “Avenue of Heroes,” and in 2014 he was selected as Coronado’s “Citizen of the Year.”
